As a tea enthusiast with a penchant for unique blends, I was utterly captivated by Friday Tea's "Purple Blend," a masterful tribute to the iconic artist Prince. This exceptional tea not only pays homage to Prince's legendary "purple" aesthetic but also delivers an extraordinary sensory experience that would undoubtedly meet with the artist's approval.
The cornerstone of this blend is the rare and exquisite purple tea, a varietal that's seldom encountered, especially in flavored blends. While I've tasted Kenyan purple tea before, this was my first time experiencing it in a tea blend. Friday Tea has expertly combined this base with an array of exotic and complementary ingredients, creating a flavor profile that is both innovative and harmonious.
Upon steeping, the tea undergoes a magical transformation. The interaction between the butterfly pea flower and lime peel produces a stunning purple hue, further enhanced by the addition of purple luster dust. The result is a shimmering, iridescent brew that's truly fit for a "Prince," perfectly capturing the essence of Prince's flamboyant style.
The flavor profile of this blend is a delightful balance of excitement and serenity. The fruity notes of dragon fruit and the zesty touch of lime peel create a vibrant top note, while the passionflower and vanilla impart a smooth, calming undertone. This combination strikes a perfect balance, much like Prince's music itself, and is sure to pique your interest.
What sets this blend apart is its unique ability to adapt to your mood and needs. The approximately 30mg of caffeine per cup provides a gentle energy boost, while the passionflower adds a touch of tranquility. It's a tea that can be enjoyed throughout the day, catering to your specific mood and needs, whether you seek a pick-me-up or a moment of calm.
The attention to detail in this blend is remarkable. Every ingredient has been carefully chosen not only for its flavor contribution but also for its symbolic significance. The purple color, the glittering appearance, and the bold yet smooth taste all work in concert to create a tea that truly embodies the spirit of Prince.
While purists might appreciate this tea without additions, I found that a touch of sugar enhanced the fruity notes and complemented the overall flavor profile beautifully. The recommended steeping temperature of 175°F (79.4°C) for 3-5 minutes allows for the perfect extraction of flavors without any bitterness.
In conclusion, Friday Tea's "Purple Blend" is an exceptional creation that goes beyond mere novelty. It's a carefully crafted, delicious tea that stands on its own merits while paying fitting tribute to a music legend. Whether you're a devoted Prince fan or simply an adventurous tea lover, this blend offers a unique and unforgettable tasting experience. It's a five-star tea that I wholeheartedly recommend and one that I received as a sample, but I have since gone back to purchase 5 oz of it to try to keep it in my available teas as long as I can!
I had to reference back to the ingredients page when I first brewed this, because goodness, that is the prettiest deep purple/indigo gradient I have ever seen anywhere, and that was without utilization of butterfly pea flower (what would happen if it was used? Someone please experiment, sadly I have none on hand). Taste wise, brewed it for 5 minutes, very smooth and light with hardly any bitterness, could barely tell it's processed like a green tea. I'm deeply regretting now that I didn't buy more than 1oz because it took so long to come back in stock and it quickly sold out again!
