In 1967, Bashir, a 25-year-old Palestinian, journeys to Israel to see the stone house that he and his family fled 19 years earlier. When he finds the house, he is greeted by Dalia, a 19-year-old Israeli student whose family fled Europe for Israel following the Holocaust. On the stoop of their shared home, with the lemon tree anchoring the land and their story, Dalia and Bashir began a rare friendship forged in the aftermath of war and tested over the next 35 years in ways neither could imagine. Based on his documentary that aired on NPR, Sandy Tolan brings the Israeli-Palestinian conflict to its most human level, suggesting that even amid harsh political divides, there exist stories of hope, reconciliation and friendship that transcends all.
