In the Appalachian hills of 1930, we meet 19-year old Cussy Mary Carter, one of the “blue people” of Kentucky. She joins the Pack Horse Library Project, established as part of President Roosevelt’s Administration, and becomes a librarian. Cussy rides her faithful mule up treacherous mountains to deliver books to poverty-stricken people in the hills. Along her dangerous route, she confronts those suspicious of her blue skin and the government's new book program. In the face of prejudice, she forges friendships and remains determined to instill literacy – to give comfort to those who have nothing – in the form of a book and the belief that books can carry us anywhere, even back home. Note: this story is inspired by the true story of the blue-skinned people and the Kentucky Pack Horse library service.
